This is an autobiography of Karl P. Abbott from his early life in New Hampshire, where his father owned and ran the Uplands Hotel in Bethlehem, NH, later to become Upland Terrace Hotel. We follow his entrepreneurial career in a variety of jobs but always returning to the hospitality industry. He ranges in place from his beloved White Mountains to the beaches of the Carolinas and into Florida during the land boom. In parallel runs an insiders history of the resort hotel industry from the Gilded Age through WWII by a man who occupied the lowest and highest positions in such an industry. His personal story is generously mixed with anecdotes about the great, near-great and eccentric guests in his hotels and the trials and tribulations of building and running a “modern” resort hotel.
