Independent scholar. Full professor of Philosophy of Law and Political Philosophy at the University of Siena (from 1998 until 2019), he taught previously at the Universities of Florence (1981-1989) and Genoa (1990-1997). His studies mainly concern the domain of the history of legal and political ideas, which include such areas as: the sources and forms of modern European legal thought, the reconstruction of the fundamental theory of the early 20th century German State, the juridical and theological roots of the cultural tradition of Western civilization. His research also covers some constitutive aspects of the contemporary dimension, such as: the anthropological presuppositions of the political; the foundations of the jus publicum Europaeum; the critique of the ideology of human rights. As a student of Roman Schnur, he has contributed to the diffusion in Italy of the thought of Carl Schmitt, editing together with the philosophy historian Franco Volpi the Italian edition of Der Nomos der Erde im Völkerrecht des Jus publicum Europaeum The Nomos of the Earth in the International Law of the Jus Publicum Europaeum and of Gesetz und Urteil. Eine Untersuchung zum Problem der Rechtspraxis Law and Judgment. A Study on the Problem of Juridical Praxis.
