"UNDER OUR FEET No matter where we are on the earth there is rock below us. Even if we are on a big ship in the middle of the ocean there is rock under us, beneath the bottom of the sea. On land the rock below us is often covered with soil. There was no soil here when the earth was very young. Soil is made mostly of broken-up rock, and the rock had to have time to break up. Now the rock under our feet may be covered by a layer of soil many feet deep. Even today we see much bare rock. But this is not the same rock which was at the surface in the beginning. It is much newer. A great deal of the rock we see is made-over rock. Thinking of a cake may help us understand how rocks are made over. A cook makes a cake. Some of it gets dry and..."
