Edition Notes

Author supplied by H&L, STC and Greg's 'Companion to Arber'; the latter has the following note: 'the work of Thomas Scott, a minister of Norwich, is an imaginary conversation between the Spanish ministers and Count Gondamar on his return from his embassyin 1618'.

The DNB records that 'when Count Gondomar arrived in England to settle preliminaries for the marriage of Prince Charles with the infanta of Spain, [Scott] had the temerity to publish in 1620 a tract against the projected match. It was entitled 'Vox pouli'and purported to give an account of Gondomar's reception by the council of state upon his return to Madrid in 1618 ... The whole story was an impudent fabrication, but at the time it was widely received as a piece of genuine history'.

Errata note at end of text.

H&L has note: 'Reprinted as the work of Sir Robert Cotton with a different title " a choice narrative of Count Gondamor's transactions ... ", 1659'.
