Date based on existence of editions of this title published in 1858, 1859 and 1860 by Sampson Low, Son, & Co. and Sampson Low, Son & Marston, and dated presentation inscription in Massey Library copy. Publisher's statement based on form of publisher's name at this time. Cf. Topp, Chester W. Victorian yellowbacks & paperbacks, Vol. IV, 1999.
With monogram "JC" [i.e. Joseph Cundall] on t.p. verso. The decorative form of this monogram is the same as that used on t.p. verso of the 1859 edition of this title published by Sampson Low, Son, & Marston. See McLean O 674.

Includes decorative wood-engraved tail-pieces.
Wood-engraved illustrations are the same as those used in an 1858 edition of this title published by Sampson Low, Son, & Co., printed by Edmund Evans. This edition is without the "List of Illustrations." found on p. [3]-4 of the 1858 edition listing the lllustrators as Birket Foster, George Thomas and Henry Warren, and the engravers as William Thomas, Edmund Evans, James Cooper, Thomas Bolton, and S. V. Slader. See McLean O 673. Illustrations were also used in an 1859 edition published by Sampson Low, Son, & Marston and an 1860 edition published by Sampson Low, Son, & Co. See McLean O 674 and McLean O 675.
MASS copy: Bound in brown glazed calico cloth blocked in gold and blind. Central titling design blocked in gold on upper cover with signature; "AW" [i.e. Albert Henry Warren]. Boards with bevelled edges; a.e.g. With binder's ticket: "Bound by Bone & Son, 76 Fleet Street, London.". With presentation inscription dated 1864. With bookplate: "Ex Libris Fianach Jardine". Central titling design on upper cover of this binding was also used on the upper cover of McLean O 360, McLean O 647, McLean O 674 and McLean O 675.
