Het verhaal speelt zich af op het (fictieve) eiland Hemsö in de buurt van Stockholm. Mevrouw Flod, een welgestelde weduwe, neemt Carlsson in dienst om de boerderij te bestieren. Hij is geen eilandbewoner maar een nieuwkomer; de plaatselijke bevolking wantrouwt hem. Carlssons voornaamste tegenstrever is Gusten, de zoon en erfgenaam van mevrouw Flod: tussen hen beiden ontstaat een strijd om de macht. Is Carlsson nu een bedrieger die een eenzame weduwe probeert uit te buiten, of een eerlijk, hardwerkende man die de boerderij nieuw leven wil inblazen? Deze vraag wordt door de overige personages druk besproken.
