This is the story of Edward Haslatt and Margaret Seaton's happy marriage, which spans forty years. Despite the overall happiness of their marriage, it is not without its conflicts. Edward has to learn to balance his dedication to his work with his dedication to his marriage. Edward and Margaret also have to deal with the disparity in their backgrounds: he has the temperament of his strict New England forebears, who never rose far in the world, while she is the child of a sophisticated and unconventional family.
