Henry Phillips killed Benjamin Woodbridge, a young Boston merchant, in a duel on July 3, 1728, and escaped to France the following day. This duel caused a great sensation in Boston, the outcome being that Phillips was indicted for murder by a grand jury and the General Court enacted a law placing heavy penalties on dueling.
