Principally letters (1835-1847) from Fairfield to members of his family in Saco, Me., while he served as governor and in the U.S. Congress relating to political affairs in Maine and the U.S., the administration of James K. Polk, the boundary dispute between Maine and Canada leading to the Aroostook War and the Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842, and dueling in Congress. Includes material relating to social life in Augusta, Me., and Washington, D.C., and to family and personal affairs. Correspondents include Hugh Johnston Anderson, Nathan Clifford, Stephen A. Emery, Amos Nourse, Ether Shepley, C.R. Williams, and Reuel Williams.
