This is a study of fictional interior monologue in comparison with findings from cognitive psychology. The literary technique — as exemplified by a number of works from 19-20th century European fiction — is related to research in the area of inner speech by L.S. Vygotsky, A. N. Sokolov, A. R. Luria, L. Kohlberg and other psychologists. The theoretical basis of this book is functional grammar (theme/rheme) and narratology.
