Edition Notes

Caption title.
The two letters, addressed to his brother-in-law Capt. J.S. Allison and setting out Taylor's position as a candidate in the 1848 presidential election, are dated Baton Rouge, Apr. 22, 1848, and East Pascagoula, Sept. 4, 1848. They are generally believed to have been drafted by others for publication over the candidate's signature. Cf. Who wrote the Allison letters / by Joseph G. Rayback (In Mississippi Valley historical review, v. 36 (1949/50), p. 51-72).
