Teams from MIT and Friendly Planet took over 40,000 photographs on four expeditions across the country. Local students joined these ambitious trips and helped with the photography. Approximately 100 images were chosen and loosely follow these journeys. Portraits of people are life-size (or bigger). Panoramas convey some of the staggering sweep of the mountains and the awesome ancient architecture. "Bhutan" begins with an atlas of the country, created by renowned artist and author David Macaulay expressly for this book.

Published as the world's biggest book and certified by Guinness World Records in 2003. Weighs 133 pounds and opens to almost 5x7 feet. Each copy requires a roll of paper longer than a football field, more than a gallon of ink, and 24 hours printing time. The digitally printed pages are photographs with caption information.
Teams from MIT and Friendly Planet took four expeditions across Bhutan and collected some 40,000 photographs. The photographers included young Bhutanese people, guides, and students and staff of MIT and University of Washington.
