El 24 de febrero de 1525 se libró una batalla en la que las fuerzas hispanogermanas de Carlos V y las francesas de Francisco I se enfrentaron en la ciudad italiana de Pavía. La ciudad resistió el asedio del ejército francés, aguantando el bombardeo de la muy bien nutrida artillería de Francisco I. Pero don Antonio de Leyva organizó una defensa que dio tiempo a que un ejército compuesto por españoles y alemanes llegara para hacer frente a las tropas del rey francés. En esta contienda sobre el parque de Mirabello se libró no solo una batalla, también el destino de toda Europa, en manos de los reyes más poderosos de todo el mundo. Y en la que por primera vez Carlos V tomó conciencia del peso de la corona española y de lo magno de la misión que tenía por delante.
