Herbert W. Franke

Österreichischer Physiker, Sachbuchautor und Science-Fiction-Schriftsteller, außerdem aktiv in den Bereichen Zukunftsforschung, Höhlenforschung sowie Computergrafik und Computerkunst.

Franke pflegte einen klaren und sehr nüchternen Stil. Immer wiederkehrendes Motiv seiner Romane und Erzählungen ist die Frage nach dem Wesen der Realität, auf die es keine endgültige Antwort gibt. Ein weiteres bestimmendes Thema in Frankes Werken ist die ausweglose Situation von Individuen in zunehmend technisierten, durchorganisierten und totalitären Welten der Zukunft, wobei Franke seine Visionen aus schon vorhandenen Trends und Technologien unserer Zeit komponiert. Als übergeordnete philosophische Frage, die Franke in nahezu jedem Werk zumindest am Rande berührt, kann die Weiterentwicklung von Zivilisationen angesichts der immer weiter verbesserten technischen Möglichkeiten der Bedürfnisbefriedigung betrachtet werden.
