"The collection of illuminated manuscripts described in the following pages comprises volumes executed at dates as far apart as the seventh and sixteenth centuries and covering a similarly wide range of styles."--Preface, Manuscripts, signed "M. R. James".
"All the English books and all those acquired independently of the purchase of Mr. Bennett's collection, with the exception of the Italian books from the library of Mr. Mitchell, have been catalogued by Mr. E. Gordon Duff, formerly the librarian of the John Rylands Library, Manchester, and well known as the greatest living authority on early English printing ... The descriptions of the books printed in Germany and the Low Countries without illustrations are mainly the work of Mr. Stephen Aldrich, who for many years was in the library of the British Museum, and, until Mr. Proctor's arrival, was the only man there who had made a serious study of its incunabula. The fine collection of Horae and some of the other French and italian illustrated books were exclusively described by the present writer; the rest of this class jointly by himself and Mr. Proctor, whose classification of the incunabula at the British Museum and Bodleian Library, under their printers, put the study of early printing on a new footing."--Preface, Vol. I, signed "Alfred W. Pollard".
